It is a measure of how the debate about immigration has changed in that a potential Conservative leadership candidate feels able to use the kind of rhetoric that would have been called “Powellite” just three years ago. The Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, was utterly unapologetic for her forecast of a “hurricane” of illegal immigration heading Britain’s way.
For many Tories this sounded just too close Enoch Powell’s “rivers of blood” speech back in 1968. We’ve heard nothing like this from the Tories since then, not even under Margaret Thatcher. Just how worried should we be?
