Trump 2.0 - don't have nightmares.
We take his memes literally but not seriously; his supporters seriously but not literally.
"Nobody’s ever gone broke underestimating the intelligence of the American voters," said a furious Keith Olbermann, a prominent pro-Democrat podcaster, yesterday, thus confirming that you can’t overestimate the willingness of liberal commentators to insult their fellow Americans—or their inability to learn from the past. Olbermann had been informing his one million followers, day after day, tweet after tweet, that it was in the bag for Harris. That this “convicted felon” and “confirmed fascist” was going to jail, not the White House. Olbermann has yet to recover what is left of his sanity.
To be fair, most of the opinion poll pundits agreed with him. Even the supposed “Nostradamus” of US election forecasting, Alan Lichtman, thought Harris had won. Without exception, the pollsters forecast a very, very close presidential election, with Kamala Harris having the edge. In the end, Trump won by a mile. Their protestations now that their forecasts were “within the margin of error” are facile. They just got it spectacularly wrong. Again.
They were supposed to have learned last time not to underestimate Donald Trump’s pulling power and had factored in the shyness of Republican voters to admit voting for him. But once again, the polls seemed to reflect the biases of the commentariat and the mainstream media who commission them. They simply can’t understand why anyone with a brain would vote for an orange man who sounds, to them, not only brutal and sexist, but emotionally and intellectually retarded. It was the betting websites that correctly forecast the result, not the legacy media and their polling pundits. Strange days indeed.
The liberal left is in a state of shock as I write. Their tears of rage saturate the internet. It’s a dark day for humanity, we are told. Who knows: it may well be. It is certainly a dark day for bureaucrats now Elon Musk, the avatar of Dark Saga, is threatening to sack half of the US government payroll. But the voters have made their choice in the most emphatic manner possible, and we have to respect that.
Never again will American politicians neglect inflation, immigration and the price of gas. Net Zero is going to be a hard road from here on. Political discourse has changed for ever and the “legacy media” - CNN, New York Times, PBS etc.. has finally realised that it has been speaking largely to itself. But who have Americans been listening to and will Trump 2.0 be the “fascist” nightmare forecast by many pundits?
