What does Brian Souter's return say about the SNP and Scotland?
Yousaf first broke bread with the fundamentalist Christian at a prayer breakfast so they have something in common: faith
The Scottish Green Party leader, Patrick Harvie, has called on Humza Yousaf to condemn the “vile homophobic bigotry” of Sir Brian Souter, Scotland’s richest man. He was responding to news that Yousaf has been reaching out, as they say on US TV, to the former Stagecoach bus group owner to help with fundraising. Harvie insists that it be made clear as day that “Souter’s values are not those of the Scottish government”.
Does he protest too much? Or could we be heading, as fellow Substacker, Kenny Farquharson, believes to a right-wing SNP led by Wee Free Kate Forbes and financed by the evangelical Christian who bank-rolled the anti-gay Keep the Clause campaign? Is Scotland following those Nordic countries like Denmark and Sweden in turning away from “progressive” values? As always, it’s complicated.
