Thanks Ian . Not a Trump fan but there is a business man behind the wandering dribling rhetoric. If can eyeball North Korea he can go and eyeball Putin.
The Democrats with whom I might feel more at home have only themselves to blame, if they had strong armed Jill Biden earlier in order to deal with the dotage they might have had a proper contest for candidates, perhaps Michelle Obama instead of the walking grin that Biden chose as a token VP.
Disappointed in you Ian. The media have failed to hold Trump to account-heck, Jim Mattis used to sleep in his clothes in case he had to get to the Pentagon and stop a nuclear war! Harris is a better candidate than Clinton, not sure if you are appealing to your Spectator readers. By the way that magazine lije the Tory party has sadly become more lije it's American counterpart. (culture pages aside)
It’s difficult to hit the balance with Trump. Yes, he is not a fascist. He is however a grifter who refused to concede defeat. He has zero attention span, doesn’t understand why organisations have processes and his decision making is totally erratic. Fortunately, during his presidency his cabinet went to extraordinary lengths to stop him doing crazy stuff and international events were relatively benign until Covid which he royally messed up. I would argue that the bigger problem is that he has now been normalised. A lot of the American press, and many people, just consider him part of the furniture now, rather than someone who is dangerous due to his lack of regard for process and rules
You are right, Iain. I am with Ernst Nolte (‘Der Faschismus in seiner Époche’, 1961). Fascism was a movement of a particular era in 20th century history, and is not an appropriate name for anyone in this age. Calling people we don’t like (and I really don’t like Trump) ‘fascist’ reflects badly on the speaker and diminishes the effect of criticism of Trump.

`Not sure that the events of January 6th 2021 qualify as civilised discourse
