Edinburgh University has cancelled or refused to allow a number of events because they "couldn't guarantee the safety of participants". And those participants whose safety was in jeopardy were always women, but the university refused to acknowledge that fact. The threats were all coming from one side.
I note the shameful rush by papers like the Observer and others to blame the medical profession- the Observer reading classes don't like us and never have. probably because we understand science and many of us pointed out you can't change biological sex.
The young people were failed by Stonewall, Mermaids and others who treated any disagreement with their beliefs as sacrilidge and acted in a manner not dissimilar to Torquemada, the rack and stake being replaced by HR investigations, intimidation, and accusations of being a fascist or worse. These ideologues recruited a few useful idiot clinicians in GIDS and elsewhere, but make no mistake the life of a whistle blower anywher in the NHS is a periolous one- most loose their livlihoods. The postion of someone who blows and whislte and contradicts a quasi- reliigious belief is even worse. So I can't find it in my heard to blame some at least of the doctors involved in this.
I agree. The clinicians who spoke out could only do so after they left the service. And many left because of the priorities of the institutions, and because they were shouted down as transphobes when they raised the question of children with chaotic backgrounds and mental health issues being ushered straight into medical interventions.
Institutional capture by Stonewall and others has led to a fear of even discussing this issue in workplaces, health care, education and political parties. Outright bans on any debate have chilled the atmosphere, which is a pity because debate would be healthy for most voters who have not even clocked the issues.
In my own party the Scottish Greens a number of us became alarmed when the excellent MSP Andy Wightman was hounded out of the party on the pretext that he was a transphobe. I believe he was and is no such thing. We co-wrote the Scottish Green Women's Declaration:
after not being allowed to discuss the issue internally in the party. I should say here that I'm a man who has no intention of becoming a woman, but the other signatories who are women invited us men to sign and we did.
Thus some of us are publicly taking a gender critical stance. I think there is room in the party for both view points, and we can agree to disagree. Climate action is much more important to all of humanity than trans issues.
On the other hand the recent SNP decision to delay promised funding for gender identity services has caused some members of the SGP to start a petition calling for an Extraordinary General Meeting of the party, to scrap the Bute House Agreement with the SNP.
Gender identity services were the first reason quoted, followed by missed climate targets, frozen council tax, failure to declare a housing emergency, and education cuts. Watch this space!
